There’s an alluring quality to glassy surf. It adds another dimension.
Small waves become sensational, massive waves can appear manageable.
Every spot experiences no-wind conditions. Combined with a clean swell, they make for memorable sessions.
They can be few and far between at your local. Some might literally only be for moments, snatched before the breeze arrives or after it abates. Dawn and dusk delights.
Then there are doldrums days when calm is king.
They often rule in Indonesia and Mexico, adding to their appeal as two of our favourite travel destinations.
There, you can glide on glass for hours, sometimes days … even weeks if you’re lucky.
This session at a tucked away reef in southern Baja was special because of the gleam ingredient.
The waves weren’t big, but they had more shine than a new car dealership.
They had a dream quality that also brought deception as the sea and sky seemed to melt into one.
Because they were small it was hard to decipher the wall and the depth of the wave faces.
The rock bottom was magnified and dragged closer – a distraction that added to the attraction.
